CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A North Carolina community is mourning the loss of four officers who died in the line of duty.
On Monday, members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Forces and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrived at a home on Galway Drive near The Plaza.
The officers were serving a warrant for a felon in possession of a firearm.
The suspect, Terry Clark Hughes, shot at police, resulting in four officers losing their lives.
Saing Chhoeun lives next door to the house where the standoff took place.
Chhoeun said he’s still in complete shock a shooting occurred beside his home.
“I can’t believe it,” Chhoeun said.
Chhoeun was on his way to work when the the deadly shootout was unfolding.
He captured some of the tragic moments on his cell phone.
“I was stuck in the back of my house and I [couldn’t] get in,” Chhoeun said. “So I record it.”
Chhoeun said his lawn, fence and other property were damaged during the standoff. He’s trying to figure out next steps with getting the repairs done.
But Chhoeun says the destruction in no way compares to the devastation felt by so many mourning the loss of four men loved by their families and communities.
“They got family just like I do,” Chhoeun said. “Four officers left their kids and family behind. It’s sad.”
