A deputy shot and killed a man who came at them with a knife in Moore County, North Carolina, according to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.

In Brunswick County, a person was injured in a separate incident when he was shot by a deputy in Supply, North Carolina, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.

What You Need To Know

  •  Two separate shootings involving sheriff’s deputies happened in about five hours on Thursday in North Carolina
  •  In Moore County, a deputy shot and killed a man who had a knife at about 6:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office said
  •  A deputy in Brunswick County shot and injured someone at about 11 p.m., a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office said
  • The deputies in both incidents were not injured

The deputies in both shootings were not injured.

In the Moore County shooting, the sheriff’s office said deputies went to a home on Pinewood Drive in West End, outside of Pinehurst, at about 6:20 p.m. for a report about a disturbance.

The woman who called 911 said her son was outside the house with a knife, and she could hear people yelling, according to the sheriff’s office. Then the man went back inside and told his mother he killed the neighbor, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

When the first deputy got to the house, he told the man to drop the knife, according to the statement.

“The armed man began to advance towards the deputy while still armed with the knife,” the sheriff’s office said. “After commands to drop the knife by the deputy while the armed assailant was still advancing his position, the deputy shot the armed man.”

The sheriff’s office said the deputy tried to give the man first aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the Brunswick County shooting, the sheriff’s office has released very few details.

A sheriff’s office spokeswoman said the shooting happened on Plantation Court in Supply, North Carolina, at about 11 p.m. One person was taken to the hospital after the shooting, she said.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the Moore County shooting, standard procedure for shootings involving police and deputies. Brunswick County has not said if the sheriff’s office has asked the SBI to investigate the shooting there too.
