“The ship is named in honor of the community of Point Loma and its decades-long relationship with the Navy, beginning with the establishment of the Naval Coaling Station, La Playa, in 1901,” the Navy said in a statement.

The Point Loma carries the USNS designation because it is a non-commissioned ship that will be operated for the Navy by a civilian crew under the Military Sealift Command. It is designed to deliver supplies and personnel rapidly and can travel about 40 mph. — The San Diego Union-Tribune

Rare San Clemente digger bee seen at Cabrillo National Monument

A rare type of bee was seen recently at Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma following a lengthy absence of observations, officials said.

On July 29, an individual of the San Clemente digger bee was spotted foraging on California aster at Cabrillo’s Bayside Trail. Two days later, another individual was seen on the same trail with California buckwheat.

According to the National Park Service, a population of San Clemente digger bee (Anthophora urbana clementina), which was known only to be on San Clemente Island, was discovered at Cabrillo National Monument in early September 2020.

Despite searching the park, the bee wasn’t seen again on the mainland until the July sightings.

“The great mystery as to why and how the San Clemente digger bee made its way to Cabrillo National Monument has yet to be solved,” according to a National Park Service statement. — City News Service
