Popular LA Smash Burger Spot the Window Expands to Long Beach

Venice’s popular smash burger restaurant the Window (stylized as Win~Dow) opened Tuesday in Long Beach into the former Archibald’s. Though the burgers are the same as the Window’s original and Silver Lake locations, this Long Beach outpost also offers a full ice cream menu, shakes, and dipped cones.

Stationing a new smash burger joint on a busy stretch of Second Street could prove fruitful for the four-year-old chainlet owned by the same group that operates Superba Food & Bread and Pitfire Pizza. This section of Belmont Shore gets downright busy and is already stacked with nightlife, bar, and restaurant options. In 2023, the neighborhood saw decades-old businesses shutter while operators like the Window took their place. Another incoming operator wit multiple SoCal locations is L’Antica Pizzeria, taking over the former Papalucci restaurant and opening after Christmas.

A home-milling workshop at Citizen Public Market

The King’s Roost, which sells stone-milled grains, spices, and legumes out of Northeast LA, will host a workshop on Monday, January 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Culver City’s Citizen Public Market, where participants will learn how to make whole wheat freshly milled sourdough with freshly milled flour. Participants will leave with some dough (for baking) and a wild yeast starter. There are only 15 seats, click here for full details.

Another longtime WeHo bar goes up for sale

West Hollywood’s decades-old bar and nightclub Micky’s is on the market, and the listing price is $14 million. Over the years, Micky’s was accused of longstanding misconduct by guests and employees. WeHo Online noted that Micky’s is the latest in high-profile hospitality business transfers in 2023 on or near Santa Monica Boulevard between Robertson and San Vicente. Earlier this year, the Abbey, Revolver, and St. Felix were sold, while Lisa Vanderpump’s Pump closed.

One more NYE option

For those in need of something a bit low-key on New Year’s Eve, Tsubaki in Echo Park has its a la carte menu along with toshikoshi soba and sparkling sake. Its sister restaurant Ototo is open late with a sake toast at midnight, a full raw bar menu, and kushikatsu, or deep-fried skewered meat and vegetables.

More bagels and bread in Santa Monica

Modern Bread and Bagel, which has a location in New York and another in the San Fernando Valley, has opened in a former Breadblok location in Santa Monica’s Montana Avenue, according to Toddrickallen. What’s interesting about Modern is that all their hand-rolled and kettle-boiled bagels are gluten-free and kosher, helping to accommodate some of the customers who missed Breadblok’s gluten-free pastries and bread.
