COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — International nonprofit Project Lifesaver is a search and rescue program designed to help reduce potential harm for adults and children who are prone to wandering due to cognitive conditions.

Luke and his twin brother Levi are 20 years old. They both have autism. 

Like any parent, their mom Victoria Warrenfeltz does whatever she can to keep her children safe. 

“It’s something that you live every day 24/7 about losing your children, and it’s a big fear,” said Warrenfeltz. 

“I have double-sided keys, I hide a key above the door, and I paint it so if there is any emergency, I wear keys on me 24/7 — it is you go in a door, out a door, it’s locked,” she said. 

Warrenfeltz goes to great lengths to make sure her sons are secure, but there is always an unpredictability factor. 

“If you are thinking of something they may be doing, then they are already thinking about it,” said Warrenfeltz. 

She has heard of at least 2 recent autism-related drownings.

She empathizes with those parents.

“When you hear about it, it’s devastating and heartbreaking. Many children, like my children, have autism — they love water. It’s the first thing they want to go to,” said Warrenfeltz. 

She wants to help bring awareness to all the tools she uses to protect her family.

You can put on a project lifesaver bracelet. People who need to wear it can put it on their wrist or ankle.

Authorities can track it 24/7. 

Thankfully she hasn’t had to call deputies to find her children, but the device at least gives her some peace of mind.
