Proposed changes to Cape Coral’s Jaycee Park worrying residents

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — For the first time, residents are seeing proposed renderings for a popular park in Cape Coral.

City leaders are looking to change Jaycee Park. It’s a park off Beach Parkway near Del Prado Boulevard.

The city shared its vision of adding a food truck court, two boat docks, new pavilions and an overlook that curves into the river.

Some residents say they don’t agree with the changes.

“I think it’s going to be more commercialized. It’s gonna be more business-like. I think it’s gonna be very detrimental to the beautiful condos here,” said Cape Coral resident Douglas Heitman.

He lives nearby the park and walks his dog almost every day. He’s worried about what it’ll do to the community.

“I think it’s gonna get to be more of a party place and I, and I’m not conducive to a good quiet family neighborhood,” he said.

Others are open to what the city wants to do.

Aubree Ganzeo works next to the park and is there on her lunch break often.

“The picture of the interior design, whatever they’re doing, it doesn’t look bad. So it has potential — so honestly, I’m not gonna hate on it,” Ganzeo said.

Construction could cost $2.5 million.

The city is hosting a public meeting about this on August 31 at the Mercola Market.
