Quinn Grevengoed powers Chicago Christian

With two all-area and all-state sisters coming before her and another still playing on the varsity, Chicago Christian freshman Quinn Grevengoed isn’t lacking for role models.

But the 6-foot outside hitter is happy to have one more in senior Nikki Swiney.

“I like that she swings on every ball and she’s smart where she puts the ball,” Grevengoed said. “Nikki definitely pushes me to be my best. She’s a great leader, and I look up to her.”

The leader and the eager newcomer both came up big Wednesday night for the host Knights in a 25-20, 25-13 victory over Reavis in Palos Heights.

Swiney led Chicago Christian (5-4) with 14 kills, nine digs and three aces. Quinn Grevengoed added eight kills, while her sister Chase contributed two kills and four digs. Tegan Colyer made six digs and Aydee Moes had 21 assists.

Jordan Johnson and Bridget Hayes tallied three kills apiece for Evergreen Park (5-1). Neve Hayes added 10 assists.

Quinn Grevengoed, meanwhile, is continuing a very impressive family tradition at Chicago Christian.

Her oldest sister, Logan, is playing at Western Kentucky. Delanie is playing at Appalachian State. Both were standouts for the Knights.

Chase, meanwhile, is a junior right-side hitter in her second season on the varsity. A fifth sister, Reese, is in sixth grade and a Knight in waiting.

That’s a lot of volleyball in one family.

“It definitely feels like a lot of pressure,” Quinn said. “But having so many talented sisters I know will make me better. It was great having sisters to look up to and hope to be like one day.”

According to dad — Chicago Christian coach Troy Grevengoed — Quinn has one built-in advantage.

“She’s my feistiest, most competitive kid,” Grevengoed said. “She has been pretty self-sufficient from a young age. And she started playing younger than the other ones did, so she already has a year or two head start on that as well.

“Quinn pretty much came here wrapped and ready. Obviously, a lot of teams, because of her age, are going to go at her. But she doesn’t get rattled very easily. She’s ready to compete and doesn’t act or play like a freshman out there.”

Chicago Christian's Nikki Swiney connects for a kill against Evergreen Park during a nonconference match in Palos Heights on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023.

Wednesday against Evergreen Park, Grevengoed had two important kills during a comeback in the first game. She had four kills in the second game as the Knights raced to an early 9-3 lead and never looked back.

For the season, Grevengoed has 100 kills, which is tops on the team. Swiney is close behind with 91. Grevengoed’s 66 digs puts her right behind Swiney, who has 73.

“It’s fun playing with her, and we’re close off the court, too,” Swiney said. “It’s nice having a teammate to rely on to get the kills and passes up. It’s nice to be able to rely on everyone.”

Swiney has played with all four Grevengoed sisters. If anybody can compare them, she can.

“Delanie and Quinn are super similar, and Logan and Chase are super similar,” Swiney said. “It’s just the way Delanie and Quinn act and the way they play — like they’re both good at defense. And they’re both super goofy and joke around a lot.”

Chicago Christian's Chase Grevengoed goes for ball against Evergreen Park during a nonconference match in Palos Heights on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2023.

The best?

“I don’t know,” Swiney said, laughing. “When I played with Logan, she was a senior and Delanie was a junior. I like playing with all of them, though. I don’t want to rate them.”

Grevengoed’s next oldest sister didn’t rate them, either. But she can appreciate Quinn’s talent on the court — and in the driveway.

“We like to play roof volleyball,” Chase said. “We just send the ball on the roof, and when it comes back down, we send it back up. Quinn wins sometimes … most of the time.

“Playing with Quinn is really fun because she pushes me to be better. She definitely helps me to do my best.”
