Quinn’s Lighthouse, a cherished seafood restaurant in Oakland, is closing its doors after 40 years.

The restaurant, which is best known for its unique location within a historic lighthouse, is set to close Wednesday following a lack of the corporate events and game day crowds that it saw before the pandemic, a manager told the San Francisco Chronicle. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.) SFGATE reached out to Quinn’s Lighthouse for comment, but the owners were not available.

Quinn’s Lighthouse manager Grady, who only provided his first name, also told the East Bay Times that the closure was likely a result of rising costs of doing business. He cited minimum wage increases and growing food expenses as some factors.

The Chronicle also reports that the restaurant is expected to go for sale, which might keep the business going, albeit under new ownership. 

Regulars turned to social media to lament the upcoming closure this week. A Reddit post shared Saturday had nearly a hundred comments from customers who called the forthcoming closure “a gut punch,” while others shared fond memories of dining there over the years.

Quinn’s Lighthouse opened in 1984 as a no-frills, nautical-themed restaurant. Over the years, it garnered many accolades, including an award of excellence by Wine Spectator for “having one of the most outstanding restaurant wine lists in the world,” according to their business website. Customers could also count on beers and stiff bloody marys, plus crispy fish burgers and seafood pasta among other popular menu staples.

The 1890 lighthouse structure was originally located at the Oakland Estuary before it moved to its current location at 1951 Embarcadero in Oakland in 1965. Before the move, the lighthouse was home to lighthouse keepers and served as a landmark used by sailors for navigation.
