ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been placed on administrative leave as the MLB investigates reports about him contacting underaged girls.

The 22-year-old shortstop did not play in the Rays’ matchup against the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday, August 13. The Rays called up Osleivis Basabe from its Triple-A affiliate Durham Bulls to replace Franco in the 9-2 loss.

It was revealed shortly after that the MLB was looking into social media posts involving Franco.

Franco is on administrative leave until further notice. The MLB released the following statement on the investigation:

“Per an agreement between MLB and the MLBPA, Wander Franco has been placed on Administrative Leave until further notice as MLB continues its ongoing investigation. The administrative leave, effective immediately, is not disciplinary under the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. We will comment further at the appropriate time.”

The Tampa Bay Rays also released a statement after the league’s decision:

“We support Major League Baseball’s decision to place Wander Franco on Administration Leave. The Tampa Bay Rays are dedicated to upholding high standards of integrity both on and off the field. We appreciate the understanding and patience of our fans and supporters as this process unfolds.”

Franco was selected to his first career all-star game this season. He had 17 home runs, a .281 batting average, and 58 RBIs at the time of his departure from the team.
