Rosamunde defies troubled history, announces reopening

Though it’s not very often that you hear about a positive “surprise turn of events” in the Bay Area’s post-pandemic restaurant scene, one classic outpost in the Mission District is slated to challenge the status quo and rise from the dead.

Rosamunde Sausage Grill, a decades-old German sausage house in San Francisco, originally planned on closing its last location, on 24th Street, in 2023, sending shock waves throughout the culinary community. At the time, management wrote that patrons only had until Nov. 21 to buy one last Hungarian sausage and craft beer. But just two months later, they announced that, against all odds, the eclectic sausage house will return Dec. 8 instead. This time, it will be run by its longtime bartender Danny Mendez and his partner, Sandra Pulley.

“What started out as a ‘would this be possible’ turned into a reality today,” the Dec. 1 Instagram post reads. Rosamunde management did not respond to SFGATE’s multiple requests for comment by the time of publication.

Its original Haight Street location opened in 1998 and shuttered in 2019, and the company’s downtown Oakland outpost closed shortly after, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Long before the virus eviscerated local restaurants, Berkeleyside reported that its Temescal location closed in 2017. Despite Rosamunde’s losses, the San Francisco community is rejoicing over its return on social media.
