San Carlos Park residents frustrated over constant mailbox crashes

SAN CARLOS PARK, Fla. — Mailboxes on Iris Road can’t seem to catch a break, getting hit over and over again.

Some drivers are taking the curve too fast, hitting the boxes up and down this street.

“At least 30, I would say for sure,” said Dexter Jones, who lives in the San Carlos Park community where Iris Road curves.

He said being on the curve means his mailbox gets hit the most.

“Not quite as often as mine, for sure, just because of the corner, but yeah, I’ve seen plenty of them. I’m sure you can drive anywhere around the road here, and you’ll definitely see mailboxes aside,” said Jones.

But he’s not the only one whose mailbox has been knocked down.

“Our mailbox got creamed like two months ago,” said Jason Thomas, who also lives on Iris Road.

“Driving by the neighborhood and just seeing everyone’s mailbox on the floor like, ‘Oh, they got hit the other day,’” Thomas elaborated.

Some people have wrapped wire around their poles, hoping that offers some protection.

Residents think drivers who can’t see straight are part of the problem.

“We have a tiki bar right over here, so that seems to happen more often times than not,” said Jones.

“This neighborhood has local bars around here, so just people flying through the neighborhood and the ones flying just veer over and cream mailboxes with their mirror,” Thomas added.

Residents wish people would follow the speed limit as they drive through the neighborhood.
