Long-winded storytellers, meet the ultimate challenge.
The Matchbook Story Contest dares you to write a tale that can fit on the inside of a matchbook.
The Library Shop SD’s annual contest is back and accepting entries through Nov. 15. The quirky contest typically gets writers from around the country and is open to all ages. Last year’s winner was high-schooler Isabella Gutierrez, with this:
“I wrote my last note to her on the back of a Starburst wrapper. I even drew a heart next to my name.Years later she told me she had it pinned to her wall all through high school, until the bright red had faded and the words lost their meaning.”
There is no word limit, but under 50 typically does the trick. (Isabella was living on the edge at 51 words.)
Besides bragging rights, winners will get their story printed on matchbooks for sale at the Library Shop, located in the San Diego Central Library downtown, as well as 50 of their own matchbooks to give to admirers, a $50 Library Shop gift card and an exhibition of their matchbook in the Hervey Family Rare Book Room’s tiny book display.
The winning story will be chosen by a judging panel comprised of former winners and will be announced on Dec. 3 at a (short) awards gala.
Individuals can enter for $5 each; submit as many as you want at libraryshopsd.com/shortstory. Want to participate as a classroom, office or book club? Team entries are $75, with no limit to the number of entries.
All proceeds support the city’s public library system.
