Santana and Counting Crows are teaming up for a joint 2024 summer tour that will open in Toronto and conclude with concerts in San Diego and Phoenix.
Billed as the “Oneness Tour,” it will include 29 shows in 28 cities. The North American concert trek comes 25 years after the release of Santana’s landmark “Supernatural” album, which won eight Grammy Awards, including for Album, Record and Song of the Year.
The Santana band was launched in San Francisco in 1966 by guitarist Carlos Santana. He grew up largely in Tijuana and began his music career there performing as the teen-aged bassist in the Javier Bátiz-led band, The TJ’s.
“Once I heard the sound Javier had I knew, right then and there, this was what I would be and that this is all I would be,” Santana recalled in a 2023 Union-Tribune interview.
“So, I decided to learn what Javier was playing, which was (music by) Little Richard, B.B. King and Ray Charles. And after that, in San Francisco, I started listening to John Coltrane and Miles Davis.”
Santana, now 76, and the band that bears his name was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. He is a 2013 Kennedy Center honoree and the subject of the 2023 film documentary, “Carlos.”
Tickets for the Santana and Counting Crows tour will go on sale to the general public Friday at 10 a.m. local time at santana.com and countingcrows.com. Tickets for the Aug. 30 San Diego concert are priced from $49.50 to $500 each, plus service charges.
A pre-sale for Citi card members will begin Wednesday at 10 a.m. local time., followed by a 2 p.m. Wednesday fan club pre-sale. These will be followed by four other pre-sales, all of which start Thursday at 10 a.m. local time. These pre-sales will be through the websites of Spotify, Live Nation, North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre and, intriguingly, NASCAR.
The tour will also offer “a variety of different VIP packages and experiences for fans to take their concert experience to the next level,” according to a press release issued Tuesday by Live Nation, the tour’s promoter. Options include premium tickets, commemorative tickets, an exclusive merchandise item and “a collectible” laminated tour pass.
