SDSU tried to ice Central Michigan kicker with timeout; now Aztecs need to steady their own kickers – San Diego Union-Tribune

In the frantic final seconds of Saturday’s 22-21 loss at Central Michigan, San Diego State called timeout before the Chippewas’ game-winning field goal.

CBS Sports Network broadcasters said the Aztecs had too many men on the field, but that’s not why SDSU coach Sean Lewis asked for the timeout.

“We called the timeout because we wanted to ice their kicker,” Lewis said.

There were 14 seconds remaining in the game as Central Michigan hustled its field goal unit onto the field. The play clock was down to a few seconds when the timeout was called.

The Chippewas sent their offense back on the field and quarterback Joe Labas threw a third-down incompletion along the left sideline.

On fourth down, the field goal unit returned and Central Michigan kicker Tristan Mattson made a season-long 46-yarder with five seconds remaining for the one-point win. Mattson was 3-for-3 against the Aztecs.

“I can’t take those timeouts with me,” Lewis said. “I guess we might as well give them something to think about as we go and utilize all the options we have at our disposal.”

SDSU kicking situation

San Diego State (1-3) opens Mountain West play Saturday evening against Hawaii (2-2) with its kicking game very much in question after two costly missed field goals at Central Michigan.

The Aztecs have gone from Gabriel Plascencia (1-for-2), the kicker against Texas A&M-Commerce and Oregon State and Nick Lopez (1-for-3), who kicked at Cal and Central Michigan.

With SDSU clinging to a 21-19 lead against the Chippewas and 4:44 remaining, Lopez missed a 33-yard kick to the right. He then missed a 28-yarder with 1:56 to play.

“I think it was an overcorrection,” Lewis said of the second miss.

The Plascencia-Lopez competition continues this week in practice as, Lewis said, “we continue to put them in pressure-packed situations.”

Lewis was asked if the kicking difficulties could make him consider keeping the offense on the field in certain circumstances.

“Those situations that we had are always going to be field-goal situations,” he said.

The belief is that Plascencia and Lopez will be able to work through their inconsistencies.

“Those guys know their strokes, know their swings better than anyone else,” said Lewis, adding, “We’ll guide them and we’ll correct them.

“Those guys have tremendous belief in themselves and we believe in them as well. We’ll run through the competition again this week, get it ironed out and the best guy will be out there to put it through the pipes come Saturday.”

TE Tanner leaves team

Redshirt sophomore tight end Logan Tanner was removed from the roster on Monday.

Tanner is a Houston native who had not played this season due to injury. He was behind tight end transfers Jude Wolfe, Mikey Harrison and Gabe Garretson on the depth chart.

Tanner is the fourth scholarship player to leave the team the past two weeks, along with sophomore wide receiver Baylin Brooks, senior defensive back Bennett Walker and senior defensive lineman Wyatt Draeger.

Notable

SDSU running back Marquez Cooper needs 30 yards against Hawaii to reach 5,000 career all-purpose yards.

Cooper is the NCAA’s active career leader in rushing yards (4,330) and all-purpose yards (4,970) and tied for second in rushing touchdowns (36).

Cooper’s 474 rushing yards this season ranks 20th in the nation.

• SDSU’s Tyler Pastula ranks 19th in the nation with a 45.7-yard punting average. Pastula is third in the Mountain West, behind Air Force’s Luke Freer (46.07, 11th) and Hawaii’s Lucas Borrow (45.78, 16th).

• Saturday’s game will include a Spanish broadcast, which is believed to be a first for an SDSU home game, as part of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Listeners can hear it on goaztecs.com or the SDSU athletics app.

Play-by-play will be done by Tony Alvarez, whose experience includes NFL broadcasts of San Diego Chargers games and soccer broadcast of Tijuana Xolos matches.
