CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Investigators are searching the condo of a missing Cape Coral Man.

No one has heard from Barry Schmalbach since July 19. He was last seen off Southeast 47th Terrace in Cape Coral at a bar called Cruisers.

Schmalbach lives in a condo just about a mile away on Beach Parkway with his boyfriend.

Neighbors said there had been a lot of police activity there. As each day passes without finding Schmalbach, they said it just keeps getting more intense.

Rosita Diaz said she saw detectives removing evidence from the condo.

“The last couple of days it’s been very high traffic over there with forensics and police officers and investigators. They came here once a couple days ago and took out some stuff and they came back today and took out a bunch more. I’m like what’s going on cause you came back twice already,” said Diaz.

Schmalbach’s jeep is now gone. His neighbor, Mike Cooper said it was towed away.

“I saw the tow truck coming down and I saw him pull into that lot so I said ‘wow they’re gonna haul his vehicle away,’” said Cooper.

Cooper said undercover detectives have been parking nearby, watching the apartment. Schmalbach’s boyfriend is still living inside. He refused to speak to ABC7.

Diaz said her heart goes out to Schmalbach’s family and friends.

“I can just imagine what families are going through, especially not knowing what’s happened,” said Diaz.

She didn’t know Schmalbach well but said he was your typical friendly neighbor.

“He was talkative, we’re neighbors and stuff so he seemed like a nice guy,” Diaz said.

Diaz and Cooper are hoping the investigators taking over their neighborhood can find some clues that lead to Schmalbach.

“A little disturbing, I don’t think a grown man like that would just go hide somewhere,” Cooper said.

The Cape Coral Police Department (CCPD) said that if you see Schmalbach or know anything, call them immediately.

CCPD said if you have any information regarding the disappearance of Mr. Schmalbach contact the Cape Coral Police Department by calling 239-574-3223 or submitting a tip to [email protected].
