Q • I like the idea of updating a few areas in my house, but I am always afraid a small project will turn into a money pit. What are some areas that are safe to tackle without worrying about making things worse?

I would say that the rationale behind your question is one of the main factors that keep “do it for me’s” from becoming DIY-ers. Starting out simple to build your confidence is never a bad idea. A few projects that may get you comfortable in a tool belt could be updating your cabinet hardware, installing under-cabinet lighting or adding a backsplash in the kitchen or bath. These are great progression projects to build confidence and will also add aesthetics and function to your home.

Projects such as updating the hardware in your kitchen or bathroom can be simple, but they give a new vibrant look to otherwise old and dated cabinetry. If you stick with the same size knob or handle, then you will be able to use the existing holes, and it will be as simple as unscrewing the old and installing the new. This will only take you a few minutes per piece.

Now that you have “broken the ice” on home improvement projects, let’s keep the momentum going.

Under-cabinet lighting is a project that most shy away from because it involves electricity. With technology upgrades in LED, halogen and xenon fixtures, most are simple to install and easy to use. The fixtures come in a variety of sizes, from 12- to 36-inch bar lights to round fixtures most commonly called “puck lights.”

Once you pick out your style of light and where it will go, it is as easy as attaching a few clips or using mounting tape to secure the fixture to the cabinetry. Some styles of under-cabinet lighting have various ways that they can be mounted. When selecting your style, it is best to ask for assistance, and someone will be able to make sure you pick the style that meets your needs.

Now that you have tackled a few starter projects, how about a new backsplash or even refinishing your cabinets? These are projects that can be done with a little instruction and a few good tips.
