Sinead O’Connor died from natural causes, a coroner in London has determined.
A statement said that the coroner has “ceased their involvement” in O’Connor’s death and no other comments would be made.
O’Connor died on July 26 at the age of 56. The singer’s family confirmed her death in a statement but did not share a cause of death. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” her family said. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
Police offered a few details at the time, saying the singer was found “unresponsive” at her home in London and “pronounced dead at the scene.” Authorities said her death was not being treated as suspicious.
Following her death, tributes to O’Connor poured in from admirers like Phoebe Bridgers, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tegan and Sara, Tori Amos, and more. Tegan and Sara recalled seeing O’Connor live right before the Covid-19 lockdown began, saying, “Can’t express what an absolutely massive impact Sinead O’Connor had on us from childhood through adulthood. Her voice, her brain, her bravery.”
Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Morgan wrote on Instagram, “Fiercely honest and sweet and funny, she was talented in ways I’m not sure she completely understood. But Sinead stands alone as a figure from our generation who was always true to the piercing voice within and without.”
About a month after her death and several days after her funeral, O’Connor’s family issued a follow-up statement thanking everyone from fans to members of the press for their support and for respecting the family’s wishes for privacy.
“Our thanks to the media personnel in general at home and abroad who celebrated Sinéad in song and story while showing respect for the privacy requested by the family. We ask that this privacy continue to be respected.”
The statement continued: “Finally, we wish to thank Sinéad’s fans and admirers for the wonderful funeral procession they gave her past her old home in Bray and for the national and international outpouring of love and affection for Sinéad from the time of her passing. The prayers and thanks of the extended O’Connor family are with you all.”
