For the third time in two weeks, the San Diego Wave are saying goodbye to a key part of their young franchise.

The Wave and forward Sofia Jakobbson mutually agreed to terminate her contract, the club announced Wednesday. The Swede is expected to play overseas.

Jakobsson, 34, is the third high-profile player to leave the skidding Wave since the club returned from the National Women’s Soccer League’s Olympic break.

The club honored Abby Dahlkemper’s request and traded her to Bay FC on Aug. 26; striker Alex Morgan announced a week ago that she would play one final match with the Wave and then retire from professional soccer. The North Carolina Courage beat San Diego 4-1 on Sunday in Morgan’s farewell.

Additionally, the club and former first-round pick Sierra Enge agreed to a mutual contract termination on Aug. 13.

“We want to thank Sofia for her dedication and contributions, which have been instrumental to the success of the Wave since the inaugural season,” San Diego Wave FC Sporting Director and General Manager Camille Ashton said. “We wish her all the best in the next chapter of her career.”

Jakobsson, like Morgan and Dahlkemper, had been a part of the Wave since the club’s inaugural season of 2022. She played in 52 matches, starting 30, during her nearly three seasons with the club. She did not play in Sunday’s loss.

At 3-9-7, San Diego sits in 12th place in the 14-team NWSL. The Wave’s next match is Saturday against the 13th-place Utah Royals in Sandy, Utah.

San Diego has not won a NWSL regular-season match since May 8, when it beat Utah 2-0 at Snapdragon Stadium.
