A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder after his mother was stabbed to death in a Clairemont apartment Thursday night, San Diego police said.
Jamal Aytes called police around 4:35 p.m. to report his 60-year-old mother, Jacqueline Aytes, was “having a mental breakdown” and threatening him with a butterknife at the apartment they shared on Mesa College Drive near Armstrong Street, homicide Lt. Jud Campbell said.
When officers arrived, they did not find Jamal but spoke with Jacqueline and determined she did not meet the criteria for a mental health hold, Campbell said.
About three hours later, a hospital called officers and told them Jamal had come into their emergency room with cuts on his hands, according to investigators.
Officers returned to the family’s apartment for a welfare check and found Jacqueline dead from apparent stab wounds, Campbell said.
Police said it was unclear what led up to Jacqueline being stabbed.
Detectives are examining physical evidence and working to locate and interview witnesses. They also are looking for surveillance footage of the incident.
Campbell said early Friday afternoon that after Aytes is cleared to leave the hospital, he will be booked into San Diego Central Jail.
