Garnacha, also known as grenache, is one of Spain’s most important and widely planted red wine grapes. The variety, which originated in Spain, thrives in hot, dry regions and produces wines that are rich and spicy with concentrated fruit flavors and often high in alcohol. The following are well-made examples from Rioja and Navarra. Both received scores in the 90s and would go well with lamb, barbecued meat and other hearty dishes. They are available at the Wine Cellar Outlet, which offers discounts of 15% to 45% based on the number of bottles purchased.

Bodegas Manzanos 2018 Finca Manzanos Garnacha, Rioja, Spain

Bought • The Wine Cellar Outlet, 11553 Gravois Road, in June for $15.99

Description • Although tempranillo is king among Rioja’s red wine grapes, it is often blended with other varieties including garnacha. In this case, however, the wine is made from 100% garnacha. It comes from Bodegas Manzanos, a large Spanish producer founded in 1890 and now run by the fifth generation of the Fernández de Manzanos family. Aged in French oak for six months, this is a medium-bodied, fruity red with silky tannins and an alcohol level of 14%. It tastes of ripe plums and strawberries with hints of vanilla and spice.

Bodegas Manzanos 2018 Señorío de Irati Garnacha, Navarra, Spain

Bought • The Wine Cellar Outlet, 11553 Gravois Road, in June for $13.99

Description • Navarra, where the grapes for this wine were grown, was once primarily known for its dry rosado (rosé) made from garnacha. However, its reputation has expanded over the years to include high-quality reds. The Señorío de Irati, also produced by Bodegas Manzanos, is a fine example. This medium-bodied red is made in a more savory and earthy style of garnacha that tastes of black cherries with notes of leather and herbs. Although it has an alcohol level of 14.5%, it’s a well-balanced and flavorful wine that’s easy to drink.
