St. John’s sweeps DCSAA indoor track titles again, this time with depth

St. John’s had won just one event entering the day’s final race, but the Cadets already had secured another girls’ indoor track and field title by collecting high-ranking finishes throughout Tuesday’s D.C. State Athletic Association meet in Landover.

With nothing to race for, St. John’s still pushed forward. The Cadets flew around the track in the 4×400-meter relay and finished in a meet-record time of 3 minutes 58.28 seconds to complete a familiar feat.

St. John’s swept the DCSAA indoor track championships for the fourth consecutive year. The girls (144 points) claimed their sixth straight title, and the boys (169 points) won their fourth in a row.

The former topped Archbishop Carroll (118.5 points) and Georgetown Visitation (118 points). The Lions also came in second among the boys with 126 points; Gonzaga was a distant third with 72.

“Even if it’s expected, even if we have the confidence we know we’re going to win, it’s still the same amazing feeling every single year,” said Chayce Bryson, who won the girls’ triple jump.

The St. John’s boys took an early lead by finding success in the field. The Cadets placed first or second in all four events to accrue 69 points, in large part thanks to field MVP Grant Boykin. He finished first in the triple jump, second in the high jump and third in the long jump. Teammate Donovan Tyler broke the shot put meet record with a throw of 55 feet 3.50 inches.

Keenan Frisby, Paul Robinson and Finley Tobin finished first, second and third in the penultimate event, the 800-meter race, to secure the victory for St. John’s. The Cadets’ ability to broadly accrue points helped them overcome Carroll’s short-distance prowess.

“We knew we had to come in and scratch and claw for every single point,” St. John’s Coach Desmond Dunham said. “That’s exactly what they did.”

Carroll’s Jake Odey-Jordan (34.09 seconds) and Jasmine Sharps (38.20) set meet records and notched top-10 times in the nation in the boys’ and girls’ 300-meter races, respectively. Sharps also recorded a DCSAA-record 6.99 seconds in the 55-meter dash before the Carroll girls’ and boys’ 4×200-meter relay teams also broke meet records.

Reigning All-Met indoor track Athlete of the Year Drew Dillard recorded another pair of meet milestones for Carroll, running the 55-meter hurdles in 7.37 seconds and tying his own mark of 6-8 in the high jump.

Georgetown Visitation’s long-distance success pushed it to a third-place finish; the Cubs shattered meet records by more than 14 seconds in the 4×800-meter relay and the 3,200 meters via a 10:52.08 finish by freshman Abigail Anstett.

Despite that standout performance and Carroll’s overall success, St. John’s maintained its dominance.

“It gets harder and harder when you got an X on your back, so to see them still come out here and execute, to be as hungry … I’m ecstatic as a coach,” Dunham said.
