Investigators found a man wanted in a crash that killed three of his family members in North Carolina in Paris, according to the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened Sept. 20 just before 8 a.m. Investigators said Solomon Gheorghe, 19, was under the influence when he was driving a minivan with five people and he swerved into oncoming traffic, crashing into two vehicles coming from the opposite direction.

Gheorghe’s mother, father and brother died in the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

The crash happened on Bethel School Road in Cabarrus County, about 20 miles east of Charlotte.

The suspect was airlifted to a hospital after the crash, the sheriff’s office said. After he was discharged and the sheriff’s office got a warrant for his arrest, investigators could not find him, officials said.

With some help from the the U.S. Marshals Service, investigators figured out that Gheorghe crossed the border into Mexico and took a flight to Europe, the sheriff’s office said.

U.S. Marshals caught up with Gheorghe in Paris, France, with the help of European authorities, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officials said they have begun the extradition process to bring Gheorghe back to North Carolina to face three counts of felony death by vehicle and one count of felony serious injury by vehicle.
