Saturday’s results
Field hockey: Megan Valzonis (Canyon Hills High School) and the U.S. women’s team lost 4-1 against Argentina in their group play opener.
Rugby sevens: The Chula Vista-based U.S. men’s team lost a pair of classification games, 17-14 against Ireland and 19-0 against Argentina, to finish eighth in the 12-team tournament.
Skateboarding: Rain postponed the men’s street competition until Monday for Tokyo bronze medalist Jagger Eaton (Encinitas).
Surfing: Caitlin Simmers (Oceanside) won her three-woman first-round heat with 12.93 points, ahead of Tatiana Weston-Webb from Brazil and Molly Picklum from Australia.
Tennis: Taylor Fritz (Torrey Pines High School) won his opening-round men’s singles match 6-4, 6-4 against Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan.
Volleyball: The U.S. men’s indoor team won its opening group game 3-0 against Argentina. Garrett Muagututia (Francis Parker High School) did not play.
Sunday’s action
Archery: The U.S. women’s team with Chula Vista-based Catalina Gnoriega and Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez enters the quarterfinals against Chinese Taipei. The semis and medal rounds are the same day.
Basketball: Isaiah Pineiro (USD) and Puerto Rico face South Sudan in group play. Isalys Quinones (Otay Ranch High School) and the Puerto Rico women play Serbia.
Rugby sevens: The Chula Vista-based women’s team opens group play against Japan and Brazil.
Sailing: The first three races of the 49er skiff are in Marseille for Hans Henken (Coronado High School).
Soccer: The U.S. women, with Wave players Naomi Girma and Jaedyn Shaw, play Germany at noon PDT. Australia, with Wave players Kaitlyn Torpey and Emily van Egmond, get Zambia. Canada and Wave goalie Kailen Sheridan play France, which has new Wave signee Delphine Cascarino.
Water polo: Alex Bowen (Santana High School) and the U.S. men open group play against Italy.
