The team behind Silverlake Wine and Everson Royce Bar is transforming a corner of Altadena with two new openings — a wine shop called West Altadena Wine and Spirits and a forthcoming cocktail bar called Good Neighbor Bar. The wine shop opened on June 17, while the cocktail bar is slated to open later this summer.

Randy Clement, who owns Silverlake Wine, Everson Royce Bar, Highland Park Wine, and Triple Beam Pizza with his wife April Langford, announced the openings in early January via a statement that circulated on Reddit. In the statement, he asked for supporters to send letters to the Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning to help grant two new conditional-use permits.

Clement says that West Altadena Wine and Spirits is similar to his other Highland Park and Silver Lake shops. The bottle shop carries mostly small-production wine, beer, and spirits, emphasizing biodynamic, organic, and natural options. Bottles start at around $12, and most choices fall around $25. Local artist Eric Junker was tapped to paint murals inside and outside the building. “We’re not looking to be anything more than just local neighborhood stores that service the local neighborhoods the stores are in,” Clement says. While there won’t be a food component to the wine shop, its first wine tasting event is already scheduled for June 27 from 4 to 8 p.m. Priced at $20, guests will taste three wines from the shop’s selection, and Triple Beam Pizza will set up its mobile pizza oven outside to serve slices.

Good Neighbor Bar is set to debut later this summer in the same building. The bar will focus on classic cocktails and offer small bar snacks like salted nuts and pretzels. There is no kitchen in the building.

The last few years have seen a flurry of openings for Altadena, which are transforming the town into a micro culinary hotspot. In January 2023, the restaurateur behind Sticky Rice opened Miya, while pizza shop Side Pie has become known as one of the best slices in LA. In February 2024, Leah Ferrazzani flipped her pasta shop into a full-blown Italian deli called Ferrazzani’s Pasta & Market. Clement says the response to his new openings has been positive so far, but the greater impacts of these openings on the neighborhood are yet to be seen. In a report from SF Gate, local restaurant owner Perry Bennett asks that those coming into the neighborhood be conscious of the community they’re opening a business in, and who makes up that community.

West Altadena Wine and Spirits is located at 2311 Lincoln Avenue, Altadena CA, 91001, and is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
