Just when it seemed like the local craft beer scene was dwindling, El Segundo Brewing will jazz up the South Bay with a new outlet of its successful pizzeria and brewpub the Slice & Pint in Redondo Beach. Taking over the former Pizza Coast Hiway on Pacific Coast Highway on October 4, the second Slice & Pint location seats over 100 and includes a breezy patio to enjoy executive chef Andrew Fujii’s New York City-style pies. While the South Bay has a few solid pizza options, this expansion represents a huge upgrade for the area that frankly lacks top-tier New York-style pizza.
Rob Croxall and Thomas Kelley opened El Segundo Brewing in 2011, with the original Slice & Pint debuting in 2019 in downtown El Segundo. The Slice & Pint in Redondo Beach follows the same format as a neighborhood pizzeria but with more gastropub influences, like fried cauliflower, fried Brussels sprouts, and arugula salad. Nearly everyone’s here for the pizza — wide, thin-crust pies covered with classics like Ezzo pepperoni, cheese, or build-your-own. Signature combinations include vodka sauce and spicy capicola and the “Surfin’ Bird” with rapini, chicken sausage, and red onions. The kitchen crew has been working to get more recognition for their pizza, competing at the Pizza Expo last year and landing in second place (after missing first by less than a point) for its cheese slice.
The lunch menu includes loaded meatballs and Italian deli-style submarine sandwiches, in addition to garlic knots, chicken wings, fried calamari, and chopped salads. Those looking for a quick meal can get an affordable $5 to $6 slice, while those willing to wait can get a Detroit-style square pizza with a proper crispy cheese edge. The Slice & Pint also makes 12-inch gluten-free pizzas with all of the same topping combinations, a boon for those with dietary restrictions. Groups looking for a takeout deal can opt for the $52 “Fancy Family Meal,” which includes a full signature pie, chopped Italian salad, five meatballs, and cheesy bread.
A salted caramel cookie topped with ice cream or bread pudding slathered in imperial stout caramel stand in as the dessert options. Like the El Segundo original, expect plenty of El Segundo Brewing Co. beers on tap, like the banana- and clover-scented hefeweizen or Broken Skull IPA, alongside a good set of guest beers.
Slice & Pint opens on October 4 at 601 N. Pacific Coast Highway, Redondo Beach, CA, 90277, and will serve from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday to Thursday, and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
