While Florida remains a sought-after retirement destination for Americans, the Midwest is also gaining popularity. States like Ohio and Missouri have emerged as a more affordable alternative for retirees who want to stretch their savings without compromising outdoor recreation and overall quality of life.

And now, another Midwestern community is spotlighted for its many perks for seniors. Minneapolis, aka the happiest city in the nation, was ranked the third-best place to retire in a new survey by the financial website WalletHub.com, which compared 182 urban areas across 45 metrics such as tax laws, cost of living, and quality of healthcare.

One area where Minneapolis excelled is its senior-friendly labor market.

“Many retired people choose to continue to work for some extra income or simply to have something to keep them occupied. There are plenty of opportunities to do that in Minneapolis since over 22 percent of the working population is over age 65,” the company states.

The city ranked in the top 10 for health care as WalletHub highlighted its hospital system. (Minnesota has the best health care system in the country.) It also has a high concentration of nursing homes and gerontologists. WalletHub also considered access to mental health services, as Minneapolis has one of the lowest suicide rates among its elderly population.

Retirement destinations need to be affordable, and Minneapolis is six percent less expensive than the national average, according to Payscale. The housing market is another draw — the median home value in the city is $324,256, about $13,000 lower than that of Minnesota and $30,000 less than the national average.

The city also has a lot in store for seniors in terms of outdoor recreation. Minneapolis was recently named the most bikeable community in the country for its top-notch cycling infrastructure, with over 100 miles of bike lanes. In addition, the city has the second-best park system in the country, and 99 percent of senior residents live within a 10-minute walk from a park. As for access to recreation and senior centers, the city’s parks score a perfect 100, according to the Trust for Public Land

Those who enjoy water sports will find plenty to do in Minneapolis. With 22 lakes in the metro area alone and over a dozen beaches, seniors enjoy sailing, kayaking, fishing, ice skating, or simply taking in the beautiful waterfront views from the shore.

First and second on WalletHub’s list of the best places to retire are Orlando and Miami. You can read the report on wallethub.com.
