Over the weekend, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler brought the “Restless Leg Tour” to the San Francisco Bay Area for a four-show mini residency. Part improv set, part “Saturday Night Live” sketch, part standup gig, the Oakland matinee show of the “Restless Leg” on Saturday did not fit neatly into one comedy category.

The crowd was on the duo’s side from the get-go, as evidenced by the fact that Fey’s opening line — “Oakland is about to be Joke-land” — got actual laughs.

It helped that they knew their audience.

“Welcome, white girls!” they shouted together early in the show. “We’ve been expecting you.”

“We’re so happy to be here in Oakland, and we’ve gotten murdered so much less than Fox News said we would,” said Fey to thunderous laughs.

Their jokes reached across the Bay Bridge.

“San Francisco income inequality is crazy. You’ve got some people broke, living out of their cars, and other people making seven figures, living in way nicer cars,” Poehler said.

They also gave a special shout-out to the local graffiti artists who “covered up the B in BART to look like ‘FART.’”

Following the intro, Fey and Poehler recreated a scene from their early days in Chicago in the 1990s. They got back to their roots, performing a couple scenes of improv and taking suggestions from the audience.

The comedians’ worked together in their early 20s at comedy institution Second City, which has been well documented in both of their popular memoirs. But they stayed away from being too sentimental, especially about improv’s merits as entertainment.

“Something long-form and short-form improv have in common is no one cares,” Poehler said.

“Like jazz and sneezing, improv is more fun to do than to watch,” Fey added.

They asked the crowd for a film genre to use as a theme for an improv scene. Someone said, “Snuff film.”

“‘Snuff movie!?’ Oakland, California, you are f—king freaks,” said Poehler, aghast. “It is 4:30 in the afternoon!”

But outside of this funny moment, they should have taken their own advice. Thirty years later, improv still drags.

From there, they transitioned to the 2000s, including breaking out their old roles as anchors for “Weekend Update” from “Saturday Night Live.” While set in the early 2000s, the duo discussed current events. The loudest applause of the night came when they announced Donald Trump will have to pay E. Jean Carroll $83 million in defamation damages.

“We finally found something Trump won’t do for money: Shut the f—k up,” said Poehler to roars from the left-leaning crowd.

Like any “Weekend Update” segment, the two brought out a guest star — fellow “SNL” alum Fred Armisen.

For his cameo, Armisen performed accents from throughout the United States, starting in the Northeast with the five boroughs and continuing across the country to the site of the show.

Armisen did impressions from throughout California, including San Diego, Los Angeles, Bakersfield, San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley. But his funniest bit may have been poking fun at the Santa Barbara accent.

“You did it, you found heaven. Hold my hand in Santa Barbara,” said Armisen, perfecting the speech cadence of the coastal elite. While Monterey is a few hours north, the accent wouldn’t have stood out on an episode of “Big Little Lies.”

After Armisen’s exit, Poehler and Fey each performed their own 10-minute standup set. Surprisingly, Fey said neither of the comedians had ever done standup before. I won’t spoil anything, but aging and feminine care were featured heavily.

The show ended with a Q&A, the highlight of which came on a question the duo had clearly been asked before.

“If you were on ‘SNL’ today, what public figures would you play?” ask Fey, reading from a question card.

The two comics looked at each other and then in unison answered.
