Tony winner John Rubinstein’s seen more stages than Shakespeare. June 13 he starts previews of off-B’way’s Theatre at St. Clement’s in one-man show “Eisenhower.”
He’s five-star Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who commanded D-Day, Europe’s invasion and Hitler’s end.
“He next became Columbia University president, first commander of NATO and [elected] president of the USA in ’52, America’s prosperous period. Later — old, bald, played golf, grandpa-ish, he got forgotten.
“As a little boy my dad took me to the White House. President Eisenhower actually shook my hand. But, listen, I vote Democratic. I’m a left-winger.
“Our information’s from books — especially granddaughter Susan’s. In ’62 the Times ranked our presidents. He, 22 out of 35, was upset, hurt, ranking low he said ‘how can that be’ and it’s where our play begins.
“Politically he remained moderate. His phrase was ‘the middle way.’ Right wing Republicans hated him. The left not happy because he stayed in the center.”
Do you mention his long affair with his wartime driver?
“No. People say it happened. He denied it. But he mentions difficulties with wife Mamie although he remained loyal to her.”
Obeying one’s hunger ‘Instinct’
In Hollywood, New York director Robert Galinsky, composer Mark Schoenfeld, singer Carlos Martinez needed a NYC pizza. So, in the pizzeria, a snappy-looker sauntered up, asked anyone care for a game of cards then, PDQ, snatched a Little Italy slice, and quick vanished. Seconds later the trio realized they’d just been blessed by — ready? — Sharon Stone.
Read it and weep
About stories on the lack of reading ability taught in NY schools, I add this:
A friend’s 15-year-old high-school son gave his mom a handwritten letter. She said: “Read it yourself.” He answered: “I don’t know how to read cursive.”
We a great city or what?
Conserving nature?
Republicans once controlled New York’s Senate, plus sometimes our mayoralty. Today? Promised pardons to those convicted of sedition? Condemning Target, Disney, Budweiser sentiments embracing gay pride? State laws on abortion? This party always stood for keeping government out of private lives. “Progressives” have taken over.
They will raise the debt ceiling, which originally was to assist the government raising funds — not to disable it. 1917, came the first “debt ceiling,” was to help in issuing World War I Liberty Bonds.
Our New York, capital of this entire world, has gone to the political dogs.
In the nip of time
Today’s current fashion surgery? The upper eye. Shove cheeks, chin, neck, nose, forehead, upper arm and lower behind. Comes now upper eye blepharoplasty. That’s fat removed from eyelids. The eye then looks bigger, lighter, younger. Gives the “bright eyes” effect. And zero visible scar since the incision’s done under the eyelid.
February was its high season. After holidays but before summer’s social swirl. This way, it’s a nice healing time.
Fauci didn’t know the pandemic began in Wuhan. Wuhan didn’t know who Fauci was. However, a clinical statistician just now unraveled its beginning. Seems a Tasmanian wombat has been observed attacking its young. Reason? They haven’t called or written lately.
Not in New York, kids, not in New York.
