The University of San Diego baseball team received national recognition this week, with three Toreros earning All-American honors.

Junior outfielder Jakob Christian received first-team recognition Friday when the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings selections were announced.

Earlier in the week, USD senior right-hander Conner Thurman was a first-team pick by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Toreros junior outfielder/left-hander Austin Smith was recognized by both ABCA/Rawlings and the NCBWA. Both organizations listed him as a third-team member.

Christian (St. Augustine High School) and Thurman are the Toreros’ first players to receive first-team All-America honors since third baseman Kris Bryant in 2013.

Christian drew comparisons to Bryant with his power this season, blasting 26 home runs. The total ranks second in school history behind the 31 homers hit by Bryant in 2013.

A .364 batting average and 67 RBIs rounded out the season for Christian

Thurman made 29 appearances for the Toreros, compiling a 4-0 record, five saves and a 1.40 ERA. He had 47 strikeouts over 38 2/3 innings and was on the mound when USD clinched both the West Coast Conference regular season and tournament titles.

Smith (Granite Hills High School) was a two-way standout for the Toreros. On the mound, he was 7-0 with three saves and a 3.49 ERA. At the plate, he hit .314 with seven homers and 39 RBIs.

UC San Diego senior left-hander Izaak Martinez was also recognized by the NCBWA, earning second-team All-American honors. Martinez led the Big West in six different statistical categories, including ERA (1.85), hits allowed (40), runs allowed (16), earned runs allowed (13), doubles allowed (5) and home runs allowed (1).
