Bass calls for independent audit of LADWP as utility bills spike
The mayor's move follows a similar pledge from challenger Nithya Raman.

Mayor Karen Bass has asked for an outside, independent audit of how the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power calculates and bills its rates, amid public frustration over high utility bills.
She also urged incentives to enroll customers in the Level Pay program, possible automatic enrollment, and a 25% increase in energy-efficiency rebates. Earlier relief measures include suspending shutoffs through the end of the year.
Mayoral candidate Nithya Raman had proposed her own audit a week earlier. LADWP attributed recent bill spikes to this summer's intense heat, saying electricity use rose 20% in the two most recent months.
